Kobani Day is a day of deep meaning for Kurdish communities here in Australia and around the world. On this day, we remember the bravery and resilience of the people of Kobani, who in 2014 stood against overwhelming odds to defend their city. Their courage became a symbol of unity, hope, and the enduring struggle for freedom, equality, and human dignity. The siege of Kobani captured global attention. Men, women, and even young volunteers stood together to defend their homes, culture, and future. In particular, the women of the YPJ – Women's Protection Units demonstrated extraordinary leadership and bravery, inspiring people across the globe and reminding us that the fight for freedom is also a fight for gender equality. In Liverpool and across south-west Sydney, we are privileged to have a vibrant Kurdish community that carries the stories, culture, and spirit of Kobani. Through their contributions in business, education, culture, and civic life, they enrich our local community and the broader Australian story. I acknowledge the work of the Democratic Kurdish Centre of NSW and Sydney Kurdish Youth for bringing this a commemoration of Kobani Day into the NSW Parliament.
