Selena Gandy

Sometimes in the darkest of times, hope can come from an unexpected source. This was true for Miller Public School principal, Selena Gandy. At the end of 2024 she was diagnosed with stage 3 follicular lymphoma, a form of non‑Hodgkin lymphoma. During her treatment at Liverpool Hospital, she met Dr Aimee Tran, the haematology fellow overseeing her care. In a moment of conversation, Dr Tran revealed that she was a former student of Miller Public School—a point of connection that filled Mrs Gandy with hope and pride. Months later, after a successful course of chemotherapy, she returned to her school healthy and grateful. Dr Tran's journey from Miller Public School to caring for the health and wellbeing of people in Liverpool reminds us that greatness can begin in any classroom, and the bonds built in our schools can last a lifetime. Their incredible story is a testament to resilience, connection and the life-changing impact of public education. I am so glad that Mrs Gandy is now back at Miller Public School, continuing to positively impact so many young people around her. I thank her.
