Vesak is one of the most significant occasions in Buddhism. It commemorates the birth, enlightenment and passing of Sakyamuni Buddha, and recognises the important role that local places of worship play in fostering harmony within our community. Many temples and organisations across south west Sydney observe Vesak with great reverence. Among these were a traditional Buddha Bathing Ceremony held in Freedom Plaza by the Australian Chinese Buddhist Society, and a Vesak celebration at Phuoc Hue Temple. Both reflected the core values of compassion, reflection and equality that underpin this important occasion. Vesak is widely celebrated by Buddhist communities around the world as a time to promote peace, generosity and understanding, which is sorely needed in a troubled world. I particularly wish to acknowledge the ongoing work of Phuoc Hue Temple and the Australian Chinese Buddhist Society beyond major celebrations. They provide vital spaces for spiritual guidance, cultural preservation and intergenerational connection, while also promoting inclusion, respect and community wellbeing. Institutions like Phuoc Hue Temple demonstrate how faith-based organisations contribute meaningfully to social cohesion, bringing people together and fostering a shared sense of belonging. I commend their continued efforts and contribution to our community.
