Ward and Olive Havard Memorial History Lecture

17 September 2025

I rise to congratulate the City of Liverpool and District Historical Society on another successful Ward and Olive Havard Memorial History Lecture. This lecture has become a much-loved tradition in our community, honouring two of Liverpool's most respected local historians, Ward and Olive Havard, whose dedication to preserving our stories laid the foundation for much of what we know about our city's past. This annual event continues to be a highlight of Liverpool's cultural calendar, and this year's theme, the importance of physical museums in a digital world, could not have been more timely. While digital innovation has transformed the way we engage with history, nothing can replace the experience of stepping into a museum, seeing artefacts up close, and connecting with stories in a tangible way. The Historical Society's own museum, located at the Hilda Davis Senior Citizens Centre, is a fine example of this work being done locally. It was a pleasure to introduce this year's keynote speaker, Dr Jacqui Strecker, Head of Curatorial at the Powerhouse Museum. Her address offered valuable insight into the Powerhouse's work to ensure stories, objects, and memories are preserved and shared for future generations.
